(KNSI) — Baby formula shortages are forcing parents to get creative, with some even sharing homemade recipes online. That has health experts pleading with desperate parents, with pediatrician Dr. Valerie Smith saying it can be dangerous, especially for young babies.
“Formula is constructed as closely as possible to mimic breast milk, specifically around the electrolyte balance. Babies can struggle if they don’t receive the right amount of electrolytes.
She says, instead of going to the pantry, call your pediatrician. Doctors can help get formula as a medical supply. The health department may also be able to help.
Retailers including CVS, Target, Walmart, and Walgreens are now limiting the amount of formula purchased at one time to help prevent formula hoarding.
The infant formula shortage started with a recall in February by Abbott Nutrition following reports of contaminated products making babies sick and compounded by supply chain issues. Producers have ramped up their efforts, but there is no solid timetable for when the shortage is expected to ease.
