(KNSI) – Cold Spring City Council and Cold Spring Brewing have agreed to build a pretreatment plant to handle wastewater from the facility. The group approved issuing general obligation bonds at Tuesday’s meeting that will be paid by the company while operation and ownership are retained by the city.

Cold Spring Administrator Brigid Murphy says the goal is to reduce the brewery’s wastewater to a similar strength to what is pumped into the sewer system from the average home.

“We worked with them to design a pretreatment that will treat their waste separately from all other waste and then get it down to domestic strength and let it go through our wastewater plant, like everybody else’s,” says Murphy.

Cold Spring Brewing has been subjected to fines in the six figures in recent years. Recent expansion has caused the facility to outgrow the previous agreement it had with the city.

Murphy says, “In the last several years they’ve had penalties that amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars due to exceeding the levels that they are allowed to our wastewater plant.”

Other actions taken at Tuesday’s City Council meeting include the installation of new LED lights at the Cold Spring Baseball Park. Also, the senior all-night party is scheduled for June 5th. The council waived the noise variance for the gathering to allow activities to continue outside until 1:00 AM.
