(KNSI) – Commercial truckers will be able to fill their trailers to capacity again next week. Spring weight restrictions are being lifted on Friday, May 13th, in Stearns County.
The Highway Department implements the limits due to soil instability. As temperatures moderate from the lows of winter, the thaw and freeze cycle kicks in as the mercury rises above 32 degrees and falls back below it. Moisture in the ground contracts and expands in the process, causing instability.
Potholes and other damage become more likely to streets during this time, forcing officials to implement the restrictions. Since March 18th, freight haulers have had to limit weight to five tons per axle on dirt and gravel byways and 10 tons on paved streets.
