(KNSI) — The father of a child fatally shot last month is being charged in the case.
Prosecutors in Hennepin County say ten-year-old Amare Mayberry Campbell was shot to death by his 12-year-old brother while they were alone in their father’s Minneapolis apartment on April 15th.
Brandon Mayberry was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree manslaughter.
Police were called to the apartment on the 300 block of Hennepin Avenue, where Amare was found with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died.
The 12-year-old was “hysterical” and told an officer he shot his brother. He explained the two of them were at the apartment, and he found a gun under his father’s pillow, picked it up, dropped it, and the gun fired, hitting Amare in the chest.
Investigators say eight other guns – several of which were loaded – were found during a search of the apartment.
Mayberry was charged but is not in custody as of Wednesday morning. A warrant is out for his arrest.
