(KNSI) – A colder than normal spring has delayed the planting season. Tom Woods with Woods Farmer Seed & Nursery in Waite Park says everyone in the area is in the same position.
“We always have to wait until mother nature tells us it’s time. This year, everything’s running two or three weeks behind. And you still have plenty of time to get your garden ready.”
He says the first step is getting the garden tilled up and then organic matter or fertilizer on top of the soil. After that, he says the garden will be ready to be planted. Some things can go into the ground right now.
“We’re turning the page. Everything is getting a little bit warmer. You can actually start doing some of their early spring planting. Your potatoes, onions, carrots, lettuce, and things like that can go on the ground right away.”
Woods says when it comes to your lawn, get out there and do some power raking to clean up thatch or debris as soon as it starts to green up.
“And by doing that, it allows moisture to get down into the soil and better nutrients to get down to the soil better. And as far as seeding, you can start doing any spring seeding or spring fertilizing.”
He says now is the perfect time to take advantage of the warmer weather and work in your yard or garden. Woods Farmer Seed & Nursery has been in business for 60 years.
