(KNSI) – Cleanup at the former King’s Inn site could begin as early as this month. The Benton County Board of Commissioners is expected to accept a bid from Landwehr Construction of $69,165 to complete the job at Tuesday’s meeting.

County Administrator Montgomery Headley says the situation is fluid and has changed a lot in just the past week. He explains, “We’re going to recommend the cleanup be done by Landwehr. The quote from the original company apparently went up so much. They revisited their quote and felt that they’ve underestimated the costs and that’s going to have to go up quite a bit. So, we’re going to switch gears and go with Landwehr.”

The county’s staff was initially going to recommend All State Companies for the job. Headley says the timeline will be moved up due to the switch.

He notes, “So, they [Landwehr] actually want to begin sometime this month, whereas the other company wasn’t going to be able to begin until about mid-June. The cleanup could occur in the month of May.”

The King’s Inn was a former dance hall, supper club, and gentleman’s club located on US-10, near Rice. It had been shut down for roughly a decade before a fire tore through the building in September 2021.

Headley says the county will pay for the project and add the cost to the property tax rolls through a special assessment, most likely enacted in 2023. The owner is expected to satisfy the tax in a single installment. Future development plans for the plot are unknown. 9450 US-10 is located on the shore of Little Rock Lake. Wetlands restrict what can be built there.
