(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Police Department is holding a coloring contest for license plate designs for the department’s patrol vehicles. SCPD Sargeant Ryan Sayer says a committee will pick 33 winners.

“Designs are going to be put onto the license plate and then we’re going to go wherever their school is, and we’re going to take a picture with that child and put it on there. And each child is going to sign it, as an artist does with a painting.”

Sayer says they’re asking for students between the ages of five to 17 who live or go to school in St. Cloud to submit their artwork.

“We’re going to be pushing them out to our school resource officers to get into the classrooms and get the kids excited. And get that art down and hopefully, we get a ton of submissions. That’s what we’re hoping for.”

He says they’re thrilled about the community response so far.

“We haven’t even promoted this at all. And in fact, submissions aren’t even due until starting next week. And we’ve gotten a lot of phone calls and a lot of emails on this—a lot of excited parents and children. I have kids of my own. My kids love when their art is posted, even on the fridge in the house. So, I can’t imagine the kids’ excitement seeing a police car go down the road and say, that’s my design there. We’re excited.”

Artwork will be accepted starting May 2nd through the 20th. The drop-off sites for these submissions will be at their local school, the front desk of the police department, the COP House, Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Promise Neighborhood.

The idea came from Lutentaint Jason Burke. SRG Sayer says the contest is another example of the department’s community outreach.

“These are ideas coming from within the police department, from our officers. I don’t know of another department that does this. I honestly don’t. We looked it up, and I haven’t found anything. So, it’s unique and this is just another example of bringing the community together.”
