(KNSI) — After a short delay, reconstruction of Highway 15 will resume.

The project hit a roadblock after issues surrounding a railroad permit arose, but a press release says the Minnesota Department of Transportation has taken the necessary steps to resolve the issue.

Starting May 2nd, Highway 15 will close to through traffic between Willow Creek Road and Highway 55 in Kimball. Crews will reconstruct the road surface along with curbs and gutters, underground storm sewer and other utilities; extend the sidewalk south of Linden Avenue to Willow Creek Park and north of Spruce Avenue East to Highway 55; update or add sidewalk and pedestrian approaches; install a multi-use trail along Highway 15 north of Highway 55; and install overhead street lighting.

An estimated 18 mile detour will take drivers along Highway 55 toward Watkins to Meeker County Road 17 to Highway 24, and back to Highway 15 south of Kimball. Spruce Avenue will remain open to cross traffic. Access will be open and maintained to those who live, work in or visit Kimball, but officials warn drivers should consider other ways to get around.

MnDOT says pedestrians will encounter sidewalk closures amd detours and asks that pedestrians and drivers stay out of closed areas.
