(KNSI) – A rash of vehicle break-ins has hit Waite Park’s north and northeast neighborhoods in the past week. The police department released a statement on the string of thefts via the city’s Facebook page Thursday afternoon.

The department is advising residents to keep their vehicle locked when it is unattended, no matter the time of day. It is also recommending items of value be kept in your possession or securely stowed away at home rather than left in a car or truck. Specifically mentioned are things like laptops, jewelry, firearms, and cell phones.

Waite Park Police suggest that for those big-ticket items it is best to note the serial number. Either have it written down in a place you will be able to quickly find it, or take a photo of the item and serial number and store it on your phone. That will make it easier to trace if the thief attempts to resell it through a pawn shop or second-hand store.

The department says in one case the car itself was stolen. A 2008 green Ford Focus was taken from a home on 3rd Avenue NE.
