(KNSI) – It’s not in your head; we’re having a colder than usual spring in central Minnesota. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data show the average temperature this month has been 38.4 degrees. The average temperature is 43.7 degrees.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Caleb Grunzke says a Pacific Ocean weather pattern affects the midwest.
“We are in a La Nina pattern which tends to favor these cooler than normal springs. I believe that is one of the factors that is contributing to why we’ve been cooler so far this year.”
He says the cooler temperatures should change next week, but he can’t promise anything.
“Looks like it’s going to get better but then, as you get closer and closer to next week, it starts looking like its getting colder than normal again.”
Grunzke says after last year’s drought, the area can use a little relief because hot weather will return eventually.
“Long range forecasts are predicting a warmer than normal and drier than normal summer. So, it might be a good thing that we’re getting even colder than normal temperatures so far and more rain.”
The extreme drought that blanketed the state in 2021 has been broken, with only minimal drought remaining in northern and southern Minnesota.
