(KNSI) — The Sartell St. Stephen High School Student Council has earned recognition from the National Student Council.
The National Gold Council of Excellence is given for exemplary leadership, service, and activities to improve the school and community. A press release says, “To meet the requirements for the National Gold Council of Excellence Award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, the councils have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.”
SHS Student Council President Summbla Anjum said of the recognition, “During COVID our council has to adapt to our ever-changing environment. However, this is the first year where we have had a sense of normalcy and I think our council has stepped up to bring back some of our traditions. Some grades in the high school have never experienced a Winter Formal or Carnival, and the enthusiasm and commitment our council has shown are commendable.”
In addition to those events, this year’s council introduced new activities.
Anjum continued, “This year we have planned various mental wellness activities throughout the year. Our standing committee for mental health has done a wonderful job planning events such as ‘Candy and Coloring’ as well as a springtime ‘Plant Party’. Both of these events encourage students to partake in a fun activity while practicing mindful skills. We have heard positive feedback from attendees and I also think it has opened a door for conversation amongst our peers.”
Anjum credited the student council members and advisor Karrie Fredrickson for helping them every step of the way, saying thanks to their hard work, the council runs like a well-oiled machine.
