(KNSI) – The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University has its 9th Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation winner. Junior Sydney Walker learned she was one of 58 Truman Scholars picked in 2022. The Watertown, South Dakota native has a 4.0-grade point average and is a political science major with a minor in economics. Walker was surprised by a room full of staff when told she had won the honor.
“I was definitely surprised. There is a lot of faculty here that I’ve worked with over the years. Some of my recommenders are even here. People that I didn’t expect to see this morning. So, it was very exciting to be able to share it with the people that helped me get to this point.”
Scholars get $30,000 to help with graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowships within the federal government. This summer, she will serve an internship in Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Walker was chosen from a pool of 705 candidates. She talked about what winning the honor means.
“To me, being a Truman Scholar means being recognized for the work that I’ve done thus far and the hopes that I will be able to do great work in the future.”
The prestigious honor is in memory of former President Harry S. Truman. It is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential, a commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit sector and academic excellence.
Other Truman Scholars from CSB and SJU are Rachel Mullin (2013), Amy Hertel (1998), Emily Dahm (1996) and, Peg McGlinch (1994), Tyler Brown (2014), Brendan Kelly (1998) and Daniel Boland (1996).
