(KNSI) — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is bringing back its I Can! skills programs for beginners.
The series features different outdoor activities to teach people how to camp, paddle, mountain bike, and fish. It’s aimed at families to try any or all of the activities for the first time.
The I Can Camp! program is a one or two-night overnight stay in state park campgrounds or group camping areas to show kids camping fun. Campers get a tent, air mattresses, cookstove, and other gear. Staff from the DNR is with the group day and night for hands-on instruction and questions.
The I Can Paddle! program is for beginners to canoeing or kayaking. Learn paddling skills from experienced guides while getting out on the state’s lakes and rivers. Canoes, kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are provided. Classes are also small, so there is hands-on instruction.
I Can Mountain Bike! takes place at the Cuyuna Country State Recreation area in Ironton. The DNR says it really is like riding a bike. No prior mountain biking experience is necessary, as long as you know how to ride a bike on pavement.
The I Can Fish! program is for wannabe anglers, especially those wetting a line for the first time. They’ll get hands-on instruction from experienced anglers, and all equipment is provided. They’ll also get a small tackle box to take home.
