(KNSI) — A 36-year-old man has been charged after a violent outburst in the back seat of a St. Cloud police car.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to the Super 8 in St. Cloud for a medical issue at about 6:00 Monday night. The staff there called the police after Alan Joseph Gonzales went to the front desk with a nose bleed. The caller said they thought Gonzales was drunk because he had slurred speech and was stumbling. They also expressed concern that he was having a seizure because he shook as he walked.

The St. Cloud Fire Department and St. Cloud police went to Gonzales’s room, where they said he smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and it was difficult for him to stand. He also alternated between sitting down and lying on the bed. Police decided to take him to the hospital for treatment.

On the way there, Gonzales is accused of hitting the bars protecting the backseat passenger window, and swiping at the backseat camera. The officer told Gonzales to stop and explained that he wasn’t in any trouble and he was being taken to the hospital to get help. Gonzales said he didn’t care and began shaking the bars over the window. Gonzales was warned he would be charged if he damaged the police car. He is accused of unbuckling his seatbelt, lying on the floor, and kicking the bars with both feet.

The officer said the bars were bent and almost touching the window, and the door was also bent and wouldn’t close properly.

Gonzales has been charged with criminal damage to property. The damage to the car is estimated at $500 to $1,000.
