(KNSI) — The National Weather Service says a powerful storm system is making its way to Minnesota, bringing severe summer-like and winter weather with it.
Severe thunderstorms are possible starting Tuesday evening and Tuesday night. As of Monday morning, the St. Cloud metro area is between the general and marginal risk for severe weather. Storms are expected to fire up starting around 8:00. There is a slight risk of tornadoes with the first wave. That is based on a warm front heading more north. In its wake, winds of at least 40 to 50 miles an hour are expected from Wednesday night to Thursday night. Wednesday, the severe risk shifts east.
Thursday, the threat of winter weather shifts north with forecasters warning of accumulating snow in some spots. The greatest risk of snow over two inches is up toward Becker County for now. Areas of North Dakota could get buried under 12 or more inches of snow. As of Monday morning, the three models are in good agreeance that St. Cloud will see one to two inches of snow.
Forecasters say things could change again with more model runs the closer we get to the event. They say to have a way to get weather warnings and updates over the next several days.
