(KNSI) — The area is still finding ways to honor community banking fixture Norm Skalicky. The founder of Stearns Bank passed in November, after a 55-year tenure with the company he founded.

Skalicky moved from North Dakota, merging two area financial institutions to found Stearns Bank. Starting with $7.5 million in assets, the company has grown to $2.4 billion today. Skalicky was celebrated posthumously at last week’s Greater Saint Cloud Development Corporation banquet, winning the Community Pillar Award. Board President Brian Myres talked about his legacy as a businessman.

“Norm was a passionate entrepreneur that consistently delivered some of the best financial performances of any community bank in the country, for decades.”

Myres said Skalicky’s legacy went beyond the boardroom. “Being an alum of the University of North Dakota, [he] was very generous in his support of that institution, and made significant philanthropic gifts to many Minnesota higher education institutions, as well.”

The Skalicky family is hosting an open house at the Albany Golf Club on Saturday, April 30th. It is being billed as a Celebration of Life and green fees are taken care of from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Norm’s daughter, Kelly, says all are invited. “Come one, come all – we would love to host a large gathering of family, friends, and community at the Albany Golf Club to celebrate Norm.”
