(KNSI) — Minnesota’s Department of Agriculture is helping several area districts start, or expand, farm to school programs. It’s similar in concept to the farm to fork movement in the restaurant industry. Healthy, nutritious food grown in Central Minnesota will find its way to the cafeteria and student lunch trays.

46 districts across the state are receiving funds. Those just adopting a farm to school program, qualify for the “First Bite” grant. Sacred Heart School in Freeport has been awarded $2,500.

Becker, Foley, and Holdingford Public School Districts are expanding already existing programs. They qualify for the “Full Tray” grant. Factoring in assistance for new equipment, Foley is receiving $45,357.50. Holdingford was awarded the least money at $10,510.50.

MDA is handing out close to $742,000 overall in its Farm To School Grant Program, in addition to already scheduled purchases of $624,619 in Minnesota grown food.
