(KNSI) — Severe Weather Awareness Week begins today in Minnesota.
Each day there is a focus on a different aspect of severe weather. Today, the focus is on the difference between a watch and a warning. Meteorologist Brent Hewett from the National Weather Service forecast office in Chanhassen says that a watch is issued when conditions are suitable for severe weather to form. They are issued for a large area for a more extended time. A warning is issued for a smaller area for a shorter period when severe weather is happening or is imminent.
Hewett says we are entering tornado season and encourages people to have an emergency preparedness plan for home and work. There is a statewide tornado drill Thursday.
