(KNSI) — Blake Mesenburg of the Norsemen is ready for college.

The captain of Saint Cloud’s North American Hockey League franchise is second on the team in scoring, and 11th overall. He has been a staple in special teams play, both with the man advantage and on the penalty kill. Mesenburg has succeeded in all aspects of the game as a forward and has his team atop the Central Division. A postseason berth for the Norsemen is already secure.

He’ll try and take that winning culture to the RedHawks of Miami (Ohio). The school has a Frozen Four appearance in its history and was at one time a perennial contender in the old Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

The team has never found that same success in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference since the realignment in NCAA men’s ice hockey. Former head coach Rico Blasi was let go and he has moved on to shepherd St. Thomas through its transition to Division One play. The RedHawks are now led by Chris Bergeron, former coach at Bowling Green State University, also in Ohio.

Mesenburg is a native of Orono, a Minneapolis suburb. He’ll soon suit up against two Minnesota universities in conference play as an opponent.
