(KNSI) – As prices at the pump climb to the highest level in years, some wonder how to get the most out of each drop of gas. Granite City Tire and Auto in St. Cloud says fuel economy starts with basic maintenance. General Manager Jesse Nelson says one thing that gets overlooked a lot is tire pressure.
“If you have improper pressure in your tires that can cost you a three to 4% fuel economy that adds up. One thing you can do is you can add nitrogen as opposed to air. Nitrogen stays at a more constant pressure. It doesn’t fluctuate with temperature changes, therefore saving your money in terms of fuel economy.”
He says after that, make sure your car’s air filters are clean.
“That can be a huge fuel economy saver, if you have a dirty air filter and haven’t had it replaced in a long time. A couple of other things, using the correct oil in your engine could cost you one to 2% if it’s not the right viscosity. Also, if you have any check engine lights on.”
He says if you have a check engine light on because of an oxygen sensor, you could lose half of your fuel economy. Nelson says people can also take their car to a mechanic and have the fuel injectors professionally cleaned.
Nelson says there isn’t anything that can be added to your gas tank to get extra miles and warns anyone from trying those products.
He also says vehicles only need one to two minutes for the engine to be warm enough to work properly and anything more is a waste of gas and unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle.
Granite City Tire and Auto has three locations in St. Cloud, Sartell and Alexandria.
