(KNSI) – Thousands of teachers and support staff remain on the picket line Monday. Minneapolis educators remain on strike over higher wages, smaller class sizes, and more mental health support for students.

In a tweet Monday, Shaun Laden, president of the education support professionals for the union, said the strike is working. “It’s very simple and we’ve been very clear. Let’s get contract language around class size. Let’s get contract language around mental health supports. Let’s get living wages for education support professionals. And let’s see competitive pay for licensed staff.”

A summary of negotiations on the school district’s website claims the union is asking for a higher starting salary for support staff, a 12 percent pay raise for teachers, and another five percent pay raise for teachers in year two.

Ed Graff, superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools, claimed in a press conference that the union’s proposal would put the district $166 million over budget.
