(KNSI) – The St. Cloud City Council held its first meeting in its new home Monday night and buried a time capsule. On Saturday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held. Residents were invited to write letters put in a time capsule buried in the building’s city council chamber wall of the renovated former St. Cloud Tech High School. St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis talked about what he wrote.
“I put a 10 page letter in there myself. I went through the history. I talked about the folks that are in this building. I talked about what was happening internationally, nationally and locally over the last two years, and I gave my honest opinion as an observer.”
The time capsule will be opened in 40 years. Mayor Kleis talked about what he likes most about time capsules.
“You’re hearing from the people who lived here at this time. Not the media or on social media, if that still exist 40 years from now, but it tells the stories of the people that are here today.”
For $500, people can buy one of the remaining lockers and sign it with their name. The money will be used to help preserve the building’s history. City hall served as Tech High School for 102 years from 1917 to 2019
The former city hall will be demolished in April, and a new bank and commercial building will take its place.
The city council also approved setting a public hearing to rezone the former Gulf Eagle Supply building at 539 East St. Germaine Street from industrial to commercial. The rezoning is needed to open a brewery on the building’s first floor and other businesses.
The meeting has been set for March 28th.
