(KNSI) — Ahead of the upcoming severe weather season, the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Chanhassen is looking for storm spotters.

The first step in becoming a storm spotter is to attend a Skywarn class offered in many locations through the middle of May.

Caleb Grunzke, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, explains what is expected of a Skywarn weather spotter. “We want spotters to give us updates on what the weather is doing at or near their location. You don’t have to go chase the storms.” Grunzke says. “Mainly, we’re looking for people to ground truth across their area. We can see some stuff with radar, but the most important thing is what’s happening on the ground. So ground truth is very, very crucial.”

Skywarn classes are free and last around two and a half hours. A class will be held Tuesday, March 15th at the Meeker County Courthouse from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Another class is coming Monday, March 28th at the St. Joseph City Hall from 6:30-9:00 p.m. For a complete list of upcoming classes, click here.
