(KNSI) – A St. Cloud State University graduate is a semifinalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year. Sarah Lancaster graduated from SCSU in 2013 and is a first-grade teacher at Onamia Elementary School. Lancaster is one of 25 teachers who made it out of the initial 77 teachers nominated for the award.

A panel will review the semifinalists’ portfolios again, review semifinalist video submissions in early March, and select about ten finalists from among the group.

The current Minnesota Teacher of the Year, Natalia Benjamin, will announce her successor at the 58th annual Minnesota Teacher of the Year banquet, tentatively scheduled for May 1 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre.

According to SCSU, the panel announced the initial field of candidates for the award in January, with six St. Cloud State alumni on that list.

They included:

Pam Gabrielsen ’96, ’03, Mankato Area Public Schools
Sarah Lancaster ’13, Onamia Public Schools
Tyler Blom ’16, Proctor Public Schools
Trisha Bemboom ’99, Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools
Tina Douvier ’90, Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools
Mara Drill ’00, Westonka Public Schools
