(KNSI) – Meteorologists at the National Weather Service Forecast Center in Chanhassen are preparing for what might be a difficult weekend through central Minnesota.

Caleb Grunzke, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says a classic springtime storm system is forming in the Rocky Mountains. While the storm is still days away, Grunzke says the possibility for heavy precipitation exists with this system.

The system is likely to drop snow in northern Minnesota, but a wintery mix of snow, rain, and ice could form over the rest of the state, causing weekend travel problems. Grunzke estimates 1 to 1.5 inches of water with the system, but it’s still unclear what form that water will take.

The National Weather Service forecasts the system arriving in central Minnesota Friday night and the storm could linger through Sunday.
