(KNSI) — The Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force says they have gotten reports of one death and eight overdoses in the last 24 hours, possibly linked to fentanyl.

According to a press release, the overdose cases are believed to be from fentanyl that has been mixed with other narcotics circulating in the St. Cloud metro area. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that depresses the central nervous system and respiratory functions. Exposure to fentanyl can and may be fatal. It is estimated to be 80 more potent than morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin. The task force says it is widely abused throughout Minnesota and the St. Cloud area and is frequently mixed with other narcotics in powder or pill form.

The Central Minnesota VOTF is actively investigating the cases. Anyone with information is asked to call 320-345-4238.
