(KNSI) — St. Cloud area School District 742 says effective immediately, universal masking will no longer be required in St. Cloud area schools.

Superintendent Willie Jett says the decision was made after consulting local and state health officials who reported that school and district case rates had dropped significantly.

A press release from the district late Wednesday night says masks will be optional for all students, staff, and guests. Due to the federal mask mandate, masks will still be required on buses and all district vehicles. Students and staff returning to buildings after a five day quarantine period must still wear masks days six through ten, and those who don’t want to wear a mask will have to quarantine the entire ten days.

The district says anyone participating in activities sanctioned by the Minnesota State High School League must follow the Return to Play protocols, requiring masking on days six through ten.

There are more than 10,000 students who attend District 742 schools, making it the largest school district in central Minnesota.
