(KNSI) – Now is the ideal time to prune trees, especially oaks, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Experts say an open wound on trees during the summer can attract insects that spread diseases like oak wilt. That risk is minimized during the winter, according to D-N-R cooperative forestry outreach specialist Jennifer Teegarden.

“Tree sap can attract harmful insects that spread diseases, which isn’t an issue during Minnesota’s winter. Tree wounds also heal quickly once they become active in the spring. Plus – pruning is a great way to keep active and warm on a cold winter day!”

Other tree pruning tips include trimming branches before they grow to more than 2 inches in diameter, keeping the branch collar by not cutting flush with the trunk, and using the three-cut method for large branches.
