(KNSI) — Applications for a program created to help Minnesota renters who are at risk of losing their housing due to the COVID-19 pandemic and reimburse property owners for missed rent payments close Friday, January 28th.
The Minnesota legislature has made $450 million in help available for renters who are behind. Governor Tim Walz put an eviction moratorium into place at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, essentially banning most renters from being kicked out of their homes due to unpaid rent. An eviction moratorium off-ramp was created as part of a special session last year.
Those who are behind on rent may apply for past-due rent, utilities, and up to one month of forward rent. According to Deputy Housing Commissioner Rachel Robinson, January 2022 is expected to have the most applications ever seen in the program.
Landlords must give 15 days’ notice to overdue renters on their rent payment before evicting them. Renters who have entered a rental assistance claim but have not yet gotten their money cannot be kicked out of their homes until June 1st, 2022.
Submissions for rental assistance through the Rent Help MN will not be accepted after 9:00 p.m. The program also says any submissions by the deadline that are not complete will not be reviewed.
