(KNSI) – A marker honoring the St. Cloud Children’s home has been added to the Beaver Island Trail in St. Cloud.
Established in 1924, the St. Cloud Children’s Home was tasked with caring for orphans, many of whom arrived in orphan trains from the East Coast. The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls maintained the home for over 40 years as a mainly self-sufficient operation, featuring huge gardens and livestock pens. Through the middle of the 20th century, the St. Cloud Children’s Home was used as a blueprint for other orphanages nationwide.
At a dedication ceremony Thursday, the marker was unveiled by St. Cloud mayor Dave Kleis and then blessed by Bishop Donald Kettler of the Diocese of St. Cloud.
The honorary marker is placed along the Beaver Island Trail, near the site of the original St. Cloud Children’s home.
