(KNSI) – A wanted felon is under arrest after allegedly shooting at a police officer while fleeing a traffic stop in Willmar.

According to police, an officer tried to stop a jeep around 8:40 on Saturday night when a man ran from the passenger side of the jeep. Police say as he ran, he fired one shot from a handgun at an officer. No one was injured.

The Willmar Police Department called in law enforcement from neighboring agencies to help set up a perimeter. Officers used a drone to search and, around midnight, found a detached garage in the 100-block of Ella Avenue Northeast that appeared to have been entered. A robotic drone went inside and found the suspect. He refused to come out.

Around 2:30 a.m., SWAT used a chemical irritant and a vehicle-mounted ram to get inside the garage. The 36-year-old suspect was found with what police say were self-fleeing police.

He was treated at the hospital and then taken to the Kandiyohi County Jail. Officials say the Raymond man had an outstanding federal firearms warrant and a misdemeanor warrant out of Lyon County. He is being held pending charges of assault in the 2nd degree, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and fleeing police.
