(KNSI) – Shoppers in Central Minnesota are encouraged to spend their money locally during Small Business Saturday. The weekend push to buy from local mom-and-pop shops is the first Saturday following Thanksgiving.
According to the Small Bussiness Administration, shoppers came together in full force to support their local communities last year, and Small Business Saturday hit a record high with an estimated $19.8 billion in reported spending in 2020. This year, holiday consumer spending is expected to break that record.
Small Business Saturday was first observed in 2010 as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores. Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to shop at brick-and-mortar businesses that are small and local.
American Express created the first event in partnership with the non-profit National Trust for Historic Preservation.
