(KNSI) – The St. Cloud City Council has given its final approval to redevelop city hall. The council unanimously approved selling the land to Frauenshuh Commercial Real Estate in Minneapolis for $1 million.

City hall will be demolished to make way for the Highbanks redevelopment project, which will include a new two-story 20,000 square foot bank and office building with space for a 2,000 – 4,000 square foot restaurant. Bremer Bank will move to the new building. Frauenshuh Senior Vice President David Anderson said it’s an exciting project for the community.

“We’re certainly happy to be here, and pleased to be here, and really have appreciated the partnership working towards what we think is an exciting plan for the community.”

Anderson says there are only a few small steps that need to be completed on their end.

“Our next steps here is to complete this design. Make sure we have all of the i’s dotted and T’s crossed on the evaluation of the site from the environmental standpoint and then we’re ready to go.”

The council also approved a $400,000 Construction Assistance Program grant for development expenses, including but not limited to hazardous materials abatement and demolition. Additional funds of up to $400,000 could be awarded after the project is done for hazardous materials removal and groundwater and soil remediation.

Construction is expected to start in March, and the building should be completed by June 2023. The property will be fully taxed after the building is completed.

St. Cloud City Hall is moving to the former Tech High School which is nearing the end of renovations.
