(KNSI) — St. Cloud Public Utilities Department workers are out now working on inspecting and maintaining the city’s fire hydrants in what is known as Area A.
Area A is the northern part of the city bordered roughly by Highway 10 to the east, 3rd Street to the south, County Road 133 to the west, and County Road 120 to the north. It also includes the St. Cloud Regional Airport.
Hydrants will be flushed and tested for appropriate water pressure and flow and to identify any malfunctions and related valves. This will also remove any sediment from pipes to maintain water quality and clarity.
The city’s website says, “while hydrants are being flushed, the water in your home may briefly have a brownish-rust colored appearance. There is no health hazard associated with discolored water, and the water is safe for consumption. Running your faucets for a few minutes will help clear up any discoloration. Avoid using your dishwasher or washing machine and turning on household faucets while City crews are flushing in your area.”
Inspections will go through mid-December.
The City of St. Cloud owns, operates, and maintains 3,400 fire hydrants. They are inspected every other year to ensure reliable operation when they are needed for a fire emergency.
