(KNSI) – A man was sentenced for the shooting death of a St. Cloud State University professor in June. Jason Robert Beckman was sentenced to 32 years in prison on Friday. The Duluth man was given credit for 132 days in jail. The agreement dropped two other felony charges of car theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Earlier this month, the 45-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder for killing 68-year-old Edward Ward.
Beckman stole a car in Waite Park and crashed it in the early morning hours on June 20th on the 2600 block of Island View Drive. The criminal complaint says Ward’s wife heard someone pounding on the door and ringing the doorbell.
When Ward answered the door, she heard “two pops that sounded like gunshots.” Beckman fired twice, hitting Ward in the chest and abdomen. Ward was rushed to St. Cloud Hospital, where he died.
