(KNSI) – St. Cloud area residents will be able to hold history when a time capsule of the COVID-19 era is dug up in 100 years. A small crowd gathered as St. Cloud placed the time capsule in the ground on the northwest corner of Lake George. St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis talked about why he wanted to bury a time capsule now.

“I wanted this time capsule to mark the occasion of something that we have all experienced. We have all gone through a global pandemic. Something that hadn’t happened in 100 years.”

Kleis said he wouldn’t reveal all the contents in the time capsule because that’s part of the mystery but did mention some of the items.

“There are a number of personal letters in here from the folks in my office, the leadership of the city, every department head has theirs in here. Metro buses is here, Centracare, the school district, the university. But this has been a challenging year, so the stories in this time capsule are important. There are a number of those reports from all of the media sources here. We have that documented either in a zip drive or CDs.”

Kleis also grabbed a few last-minute items, including a license plate from his car, an umbrella because it was raining, a dollar bill and a KNSI pen, and placed them inside a container donated by DCI in St. Cloud.

Concrete was poured over the top and the capsule will be opened sometime in 2121.

The mayor says he likes to bury time capsules when the city adds a new building. Another time capsule will be buried when St. Cloud opens its new city hall. He says it’s part of his love of history.
