(KNSI) – Officials report at least 23 Minnesotans have gotten sick from onions contaminated with Salmonella. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the Minnesota cases have been reported in people age 7 to 77. All got sick between August 8th and September 18th. Four people were hospitalized, and none have died.

The CDC says Salmonella was found in fresh whole red, white, and yellow onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico and distributed by ProSource Inc. These onions may have stickers or packaging indicating the brand (ProSource Inc.) and the country (Mexico) where they were grown.
The onions were sold to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the United States. ProSource says the onions were last imported on August 27th, but these imported onions can last up to three months in storage and may still be in homes and businesses.

Health officials say to throw away any whole red, white, or yellow onions you have at home that do not have a sticker or packaging. The CDC says if you can’t tell where the onions are from, don’t buy or eat them. Officials say to wash surfaces and containers the onions may have touched using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
