(KNSI) — The St. Cloud Fire Department says a fire that caused roughly $1500 damage to a home Wednesday evening was an accident.

Firefighters were called to a home in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue Northeast for a kitchen fire around 7:30. According to a critical incident report, the fire was caused by a stove burner that was inadvertently turned on, lighting combustible materials that were sitting on the stovetop.

A neighbor had put out most of the fire with a portable fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived. The fire department put out a small amount of smoldering debris.

According to the 2019 Minnesota Fire Report, the leading cause of structure fires in 2019 was cooking. Fourteen percent of cooking fires were caused by combustible materials being too close to the stove. Ten percent were caused by cooking equipment like a stove being turned on accidentally or not turned off.

No one was hurt.
