(KNSI) – The United Way of Central Minnesota’s Day of Caring was held Wednesday. KNSI News caught up with volunteers Mary Mackedanz, Suzy Amundson and Rebecca Roehrdanz from Reach Up Head Start as they were working on 14th Avenue South in the Lake George neighborhood. Mary talked about what they were doing.

“We’re cleaning storm drains and putting a little painted sign on there to remind people not to dump stuff down in the drain, that this water goes straight into waterways.”

Mary says nothing besides rainwater should go down the drains. Suzy talked about why she volunteers.

“We get outside. We get to be outside instead of in our offices, and that’s the fun part about this day. And the Day of Caring has gone on for many years for United Way, so there are many opportunities.”

Reach Up Head Start has been volunteering with the United Way for about 20 years. The trio was among more than 100 volunteers at nine sites around the St. Cloud area on Wednesday morning.
