(KNSI) – An online petition asks that administrators in the St. Cloud Area School District allow a tradition to continue.

St. Cloud Apollo High School student Aidan Kuhn started the petition on Change.org stating the school has a long tradition of student-organized games between the senior and junior class.

The Powderpuff games included senior girls playing junior girls in flag football and the senior boys class playing the junior boys in a volleyball game.

According to the petition, the Apollo administration has deemed the games to have “sexist origins” and banned the games this year.

Kuhn’s petition states that after thorough research, the students of Apollo would like to disagree that the origins are sexist and would like to continue the tradition of playing.

As of 1 p.m. on Friday, the petition had a little more than 600 signatures.

An email from District 742 to KNSI about the petition stated, “Our high school administrators work with our student councils to determine homecoming events. Any activities planned must meet two criteria: student and staff safety and inclusivity. In the past, there have been safety concerns, including injuries and altercations, and our priority is to offer safe and fun celebrations.”
