(KNSI) – An Illinois man has been arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of Jay Boughton on Highway 169 in Plymouth back in July.

The Plymouth Police Department says the suspect, 33-year-old Jamal Lindsey Smith of Chicago, has been arrested and is awaiting extradition from Illinois to Minnesota.

On August 24th, Macon County court records show Smith was booked into the Macon County Jail after being arrested by the Decatur Police Department. He is charged with one count of direct criminal contempt. He could face a second-degree murder charge, according to Plymouth Police.

Around 10 p.m. on July 6th, authorities say two vehicles were traveling south on Highway 169 south of County Road 9. One person, who was in an SUV, shot at the other vehicle, hitting its driver, 56-year-old Jay Boughton. He was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale but later died. Authorities say an interaction between the two drivers might have preceded the shooting.

Plymouth Police say the investigation is ongoing, and Smith’s case has been submitted to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.
