(KNSI) – After a one-year hiatus because of the pandemic, the fifth annual Rock for Alzheimer’s concert returns to Bad Habit Brewing in St. Joseph. Event organizer Tommy Vee is expecting people to be in the mood to celebrate.
“Because we missed last year with COVID there just seems to be a lot more excitement in the air about it. It’s really, really a fun day.”
This year’s performance is Sunday, September 12th, and includes Tommy Vee’s band “The Killer Vees” with Jeff and Matt Vee. The other bands include Slip Twister, Collective Unconscience, and performances from the School of Rock.
Along with the entertainment, Vee says it’s a day to help families struggling with the challenges of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s.
“It’s really designed for the caregiver. And we encourage people to jump up, grab a microphone and tell a little bit of their story about why they’re there. And they’re all different. You’d think we’re dealing with the common disease and that the stories would be similar but they’re not. They’re different.”
There are several times throughout the concert where people can share their stories and struggles with Alzheimer’s. The concert is a fundraiser that also brings awareness and education about the disease.
The Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will be there to offer resources to families with someone recently diagnosed with the disease. The concert is free, but free-will donations are accepted, and all the proceeds will go to the St. Cloud office of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The concert was started in 2015 by Tommy Vee and his family a few years after their father, legendary musician Bobby Vee, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Bobby Vee died from the disease in October of 2016.
