(KNSI) – The mask mandate on public transportation has been extended to 2022. The mandate includes St. Cloud Metro Bus routes.

The Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) extended the mask requirement until January 18, regardless of vaccination status. Federal requirements override all state masking changes. Not wearing a mask on a Metro Bus is a violation of federal law.

Metro Bus has masks available to riders at the Metro Bus Transit Center in downtown St. Cloud and on Dial-a-Ride and ConneX buses.

According to the TSA, requirements are in line with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.

Passengers must state they qualify for an exemption to ride without an appropriate mask.

There are three exceptions to the federal mandate:

1. Children under the age of 2.
2. People with disabilities, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, who cannot safely wear a mask.
3. If wearing a mask would create a risk to workplace health, safety, or job duty as determined by the relevant workplace safety guidelines or federal regulations.
