(KNSI) – Governor Tim Walz has ordered all American and Minnesota flags at state and federal buildings to be flown at half staff to honor the lives of the U.S. service members killed in a terror attack at Hamid Karzai Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan Thursday.

At least 13 U.S. service members died when two suicide bombers and a gunman attacked the mass of people waiting outside the airport, desperate for a flight out of Afghanistan. The terror group ISIS-K has reportedly taken responsibility for the attack, which also killed 60 Afghans and wounded countless others.

Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are also encouraged to join in lowering their flags.

The order goes into effect immediately and remains in place until sunset August 30th. The American-led evacuation of Afghanistan is set to end August 31st. Thursday, President Joe Biden says that deadline will not be extended, bringing to a close a 20 year U.S. presence in the country.
