(KNSI) – People around the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant may notice extra activity on Tuesday, August 10th, as crews respond to a simulated emergency at the plant.

Minnesota Department of Public Safety, along with other state, county, and city agencies, will test their response in the event of an incident at the plant. Xcel Energy, who operates the nuclear plant, the Department of Agriculture, Department of Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board, Department of Health, Department of Human Services, Department of Military Affairs, Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota State Patrol, and Department of Transportation will all be part of the drill. Sherburne and Wright Counties, FEMA Region Five, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and volunteer agencies are also responding.

A variety of field activities involving emergency responder vehicles will take place in Sherburne and Wright counties near the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant. In the unlikely event of a nuclear generating plant incident, emergency responders, state officials, and plant operators will take action to protect the health and safety of residents. Participants must demonstrate versatility and accuracy in their responses.
