(KNSI) – The Stearns County Explorers program is holding an informational meeting on Sunday for young people interested in working in law enforcement.

The Explorers program is for anyone age 15 to 21 years old, and anyone interested in being in public safety should attend the meeting. The meeting is at the Stearns County Law Enforcement Center on Sunday from 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. The program meets on Sunday evenings starting in September.

Stearns County Jail Program Sergeant Steven Nohner says despite pressure on law enforcement in recent years, interest in the program is strong.

“I’ll say the numbers are actually doing very well in the last couple of years. In fact, as we recruited last year, we probably had a record number of people actually show interest in the program. So our program is actually doing quite well in terms of membership.”

Explorers will learn about public safety procedures, compete against other programs, and help out at community events. Nohner says the program lets young people get a taste of work.

“That allows us to put them through training and show them some scenario-based stuff with them getting exposed to law enforcement, and with any luck, hopefully making them members of our department, if it’s right.”

He says around 20% of the deputies and jail staff spent time in the Stearns County Explorers program or another department’s program.
