(KNSI) – The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and St. Cloud Police Department have been invited to apply for a grant of almost $35,000 that provides federal criminal justice funding to state, local and tribal jurisdictions.

The sheriff’s office’s portion of the 2021 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant money would be used to buy Fireaway Stat-X First Responder fire suppression canister kits. The kit is an emergency condensed aerosol fire suppression tool. The handheld unit can be tossed into an enclosed room where active fire is burning to suppress early stage fires before the flames get too big and require a fire department response.

The St. Cloud Police Department would use the money to buy a pole camera system, a new jaws of life multi-purpose tool, and crime prevention and community engagement materials.

The money will be divided equally between the sheriff’s office and the police department.

The community is invited to include their input by clicking here to send an email.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant is named after a New York City Police officer killed in the line of duty in 1988 while protecting an immigrant witness who agreed to testify against drug dealers. The Bureau of Justice Assistance administers the program. It provides federal criminal justice funding to state, local and tribal jurisdictions which can be used in several areas, including personnel, training, equipment, and supplies.
