(KNSI) – Two juvenile runaways are awaiting criminal charges after allegedly running from police in a stolen vehicle early Thursday morning.

The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office says about 1:00; a deputy saw a vehicle speeding through Dassel on Highway 12 and tried to pull the driver over. Police say the vehicle refused to stop and wound up on a dead end near a lake, where the driver and passenger both fled on foot. Police say the driver jumped in the lake, and the passenger ran off, only to return a short time later. Officers lost sight of the driver due to foggy conditions around the lake, so the Dassel Fire Department was called to help in the search, which was initially unsuccessful.

Investigators determined that the driver and passenger were both 16-year-old runaways. The driver, from Burnsville, was found a few hours later by a civilian. They say the driver was in another stolen vehicle on the north side of the lake. When police tried to stop them again, they took off eastbound on Highway 12 and have not been found. The passenger from Pine City was released to a parent pending formal charges.
