(KNSI) – A national grocery wholesaler is partnering up with St. Cloud-based Coborn’s, Inc. starting next year.

“We are excited to embark on this new partnership with AWG and to be a part of their plans to expand into Minnesota,” said Chris Coborn, president and CEO of Coborn’s. “This partnership provides Coborn’s a strong wholesale partner and positions our company well for future long-term growth and stability.”

Associate Wholesale Grocers, which distributes fresh and frozen foods throughout 28 states, will become Coborn’s stores’ primary retailer starting in January 2022. The business move will also bring the Upper Midwest Division of AWG up to St. Cloud in early 2022.

In late 2022, the wholesaler will build a fresh and frozen warehouse to distribute goods to grocery stores throughout the region. AWG says that the project is expected to create more than 400 jobs.

“We are excited about the prospect of AWG’s newest facility opening in St. Cloud bringing investment, jobs and services in support of existing local businesses,” said St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis. “The proposed state-of-the-art facility aligns with the city’s key industry sectors in automation and food manufacturing.”

Coborn’s, which turns 100 this year, operates 59 grocery stores in Minnesota, the Dakotas and Wisconsin.
