(KNSI) – Investigators looking into the shooting death of a man wanted by U.S. Marshals ask for anyone with video of the shooting to turn it in.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says officers from six law enforcement agencies were working as part of the U.S. Marshals North Star Fugitive Task Force on June 3rd when the shooting happened at the top of a parking garage in Minneapolis’s Uptown neighborhood.
A Hennepin County deputy and a Ramsey County deputy on the task force opened fire, killing 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith, Jr., of St. Paul. He was allegedly wanted on weapons charges. Both agencies have notified the BCA that their deputies were working in an undercover capacity at the time, and their identities can’t be released due to state law protecting their undercover status.
Officers from the Anoka, Hennepin, and Ramsey County sheriff’s offices; the Minnesota Department of Corrections; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement; and the U.S. Marshals Service were present during the incident, but the BCA is not aware of any video of the incident because members of the task force reportedly don’t wear body cameras and there were no dash cams in the police vehicles either.
The agency is asking anyone who captured the footage to contact them at 651-793-7000.
